Trench 1D
A trench was dug N of trenches 1, 1A, 1B and 1C which measures 2 x 8m, and it is designated as Trench 1D.
In this trench strata A and B continue as expected; however, in the extreme NW corner of the trench there is a chage in the soil and in the finds which necessatate naming a new stratum.
Stratum F: Underlie Stratum A and overlies the North Tile Stratum, and this stratum s present in the NW corner only of ID. The Stratum is full of pottery sherds and contains some tile pieces. Also the earth becomes darker and continues among more stone; there are some gray clay type splotches evident. Carbon is present.
The entire trench both in the E and W is hevailly covered with tiles, although the W tiles are by far thicker in their bed. It seems as if all the tilesoverlie Stratum E, whcih is similar to those they found in
N part of trenches 1B and 1C.
Numerous frieze and cornice pieces were dound in Trench 1D, and in order to facilitate the placement of the pieces in relation to those found in the previous trenches, a system was contrived whereby a piece recieved a double trench number, first indicating its placement inside the hypothetical extention inside of tremches 1, IA, 1B and 1C, and the other indicaing its location in the trench 1D. Thus there are 4 areas in thhis gid- 1-1D, 1A-1D, 1B.-1D, and 1C-1D.
