Introduction

Civitate C 8 (CC-8) will be a test trench located South of the (Orientalizing) Workshop building, and West of trench Civitate C 7.  Related excavations include Civitate 3, 4, 6 (SW7/NWI 1969).

Trench CC-8 will be excavated because of its proximity to the 2007 trench CC-7, which has been recovering a spread of small rocks across most of the trench. Shell deposits in the center (NW/SW area) of the trench and throughout Locus 5 were recovered, along with large amounts of pottery and bone.  This area could possibly be the remnants of the foundation of a domestic structure, which would indicate a settlement was located in the area. Trench CC-8 will further explore this possibility, and will also determine if any more materials eroded from the Workshop building since the retaining wall did not sustain.
