Brush and roots were cleared from the area of CB51 in order to lay out trench lines. Once cleared and level, the lines were strung creating a 3 meter by 2 meter trench with the 3 meter walls on the North and South, and the 2 meter walls on the East and West.

Opening photos and opening elevations were taken. The datum point of the trench is 33.55 m. A.E.

Opening Elevations Locus 1 :

NW: 32.07 m. A.E.

NE: 32.21 m. A.E.

SW: 32.09 m. A.E.

SE: 32.20 m. A.E.

The trench is fairly flat with one large stump in the SE corner and two smaller stumps in the Eastern half. The soil is dark brown, very hard and full of organic material. Pick pass done in a 2m by 1m strip starting at the West wall, pulling back East. Some small rocks and terra cotta are being pulled up in the pick pass. The pick pass was sorted with trowels and the dirt was then dumped into buckets which were then dumped onto the designated dirt dump area, situated to the NW of the trench. Some terra

cotta found in the sorted soil, small amounts of pottery. Second pick pass done in a 2m by 1m area. The soil is very difficult to break up, coming up from the pass in very large chunks. Leveling of the soil from the previous pick pass is being conducted while the second pick pass is sorted. Soil leveled from second pick pass and roots clipped before lunch.

PM

Pick pass done in the remaining 2m by 1m stretch running along the Eastern wall. There are many small rocks coming up in the soil and small amounts of terra cotta. While the remainder of the Eastern portion was sorted, a pick pass of a 2m by 1m strip running along the Western wall was done. The trench dirt is becoming looser and finer but it is still topsoil. Very little amounts of terra cotta and pottery being found in the sorted soil. Roots clipped in the Eastern half of

the trench in conjunction with the sorting of the soil done in the Western half. After sorting was finished, light baulk walling was done. While baulking the Western wall, a terra cotta rochetto was found.
