June 23, 1989

The fourth cut was continued in K-L/85 and into K/83-84.  This takes the trench down to roughly 35cm below surface.  A bronze fibula pin was immediately encountered in L/85.  On the 84-85 line running from K to L Many tile fragments exist, as they did yesterday at a higher level.  This was also the location of the acroterion paw fragment.  This apparent "line" of terra cotta seems to stop in the western part of the cut.  Meters K-L/83-84 have little tile relative to K-L/85.  L-M/82 had lots of tile as well however.  By the times meters K/83-85, L/82-85, and M/82-85 had all been completed to this level, 3 cassetta of tile had been filled and 1 1/2 lattte boxes of pottery.  Orangeware and impasto were the two most common wares.  Pithos fragments also continue to be found throughout the cut.

Another cut was begun in M/83.  Soil remains brown w/ a reddish tint due to plaster and tile content.  Carbon appears in places, as does vitrified tile, but no clear burn layer has been reached. 2 pieces of incised bucchero were found in M/83.

The fifth cut was continued in K-M/83-84 to a depth of 45 cm below the northern baulk.  The soil at this level is a granulated, loose-packed red-brown w/ many chunks of carbon throughout.  Tile and plaster is heavy, some badly vitrified.  Small quantities of bone, bronze, and burned ivory were found.  Of particular interest was a female antefix found in M/84.  At this depth the head rested roughly 20 cm above the floor level of the S.E. Building and only one meter from the nearest row of column bases.

One latte box of pottery was found.  Tile on the 84-85 line from K-L continues to exist at this level.
