Today work in the SW sounding continued w/ L.5215. At 585.04 meter, a heavily burned plastered surface was found, which took locus L.5222. It appeared mostly in the NW corner of the sounding. Its subsurface made of rather flat pebbles (6-12cm) that must have brought from Tigris due to their water worn round surfaces. The space in between the pebbles was filled with very coarse sand w/ 3-4 mm size making even surface. Plaster with 1-1.5 cm thickness was placed on top of them. The entire thickness of this structure is about 5 cm. The artifacts related with this feature are rare and the sherds are too small to give any information. After taking photo and necessary elevations, this feature is removed and the excavation in the sounding carried out with the new locus L.5223 for the following 25cm depth.

Work in L.5208 was carried out about 4-5 cm and it became clear that this pit’s bottom is reached. Thus, general collection area L.5220 expanded and took over the space of this pit.

We also worked in pit L.5210 located to N of pit L. 5208. We excavated this pit about 30 cm but its bottom has net been reached yet. Its soil is very soft, blackish gray. I did not look at the artifacts from this pit, but since, it is very close to the edge of the Ubaid settlement, the material in it and the ashy soil may well be contaminated with the later period deposits that were accumulated near to it (from L.5215 area).

Additionally, we continued excavating in L.5220 w/ small pick as fast as possible because we lacked big pick in our trench.

Has note The purpose of the daily journal was to record the activities taking place in a trench each day. This included which loci were excavated, how and why loci were excavated and the ongoing impressions of the relationships among loci. It should be noted that journals record the actions, impressions and ideas of trench supervisors during the excavations. They are not, therefore, the final interpretations or syntheses of the emerging data.
