I Introduction

I.  INTRODUCTION

Excavation was carried out in the CA area during the 2012 season to ascertain whether evidence for the habitation of non-elites on Poggio Civitate could be found.  The evidence uncovered up to that time hinted at the possibility, but was not sufficient to confirm such a hypothesis.  Certainly, the existence of the OC2-Workshop on the hill clearly indicated that non-elites worked on the hill, but it did not resolve the question of where they lived. Additionally, the later discoveries of a well 147.5 m. west of the Archaic Complex ( LS I , MG II , JBB II ) and of a building of light-framed architecture down the slope of Piano del Tesoro to the south of that complex ( AJC/ARR I , II ) add evidence, but still not confirmatory, that non-elite individuals may have dwelt on the hill.  Although the excavations conducted in 2012 in the CA area did not find non-elite habitation structures, it did uncover evidence that metal processing may have taken place in this area.  Significant amounts of iron slag were recovered along with what appears to be traces of wall foundations for a light structure(s) ( AAF II , CGL I , AEG VI , ARR IV , CAC I , JRV V ).

The purpose for excavating trench CA-77 during this 2013 season is to open up the area around the previous year's excavations to discover the extent of the area that may have been used for metal processing and to clarify the arrangement of the structure(s) that was involved.
