Introduction
I. Introduction
In 2010 a large part of the Civitate B (CB) area was cleared of forest, making it possible to conduct excavations in a previously relatively unexplored area of Poggio Civitate (see trench books for CB-35 , CB-36 , CB-37 , CB-38 , CB-39 , CB-40 and CB-41 ). Excavations continued in the CB area in 2011 in trenches CB-38 , CB-39 and CB-42 , CB-43 , CB-44 , CB-45 , CB-46 , CB-47 , CB-48 , CB-49 , CB-50 and CB-51 . These trenches clarified the the ancient topography of the area but did not yield any architectural remains apart from terracotta fragments.
Excavations in the Civitate C (CC) area took place in 1968-1969 and 2007-2009 (see trench books for CC-1 , CC-2 , CC-3 , CC-4 , CC-5 , CC-6 , CC-7 , CC-8 and CC-9 ) and were also unable to uncover definite evidence of ancient architecture in that area.
The 2012 trenches in CB will be placed between the previous trenches in CB and CC. The goal of CB-55 is to:
-
Search for architectural remains contemporary with the Orientalizing and/or Archaic buildings on Piano del Tesoro.
-
Recover dateble finds to improve our understanding of the stratigraphy of the area.
-
Improve our understanding of the ancient topography of the area.
