Civitate B
In Civitate B (see Timothy Gantz, Book 1, 1966, p. 25-27 ), it was decided to dig a series of long, narrow test trenches to ascertain the source of the heavy surfact tiles.
Civitate B6
A 0.50m X 29.00m trench was cut on a E-W axis up the slope of the hill. Shaly yellow soil with no tiles was discovered throughout the trench at 30-40cm, except at one point, about 17m from the west end of the trench, where bedrock was found. About twenty small worn pieces of tile were found close to the surface. A broken vase handle was found about 5m from the east end of the trench.
Civititate B7
About 50cm to the north of 136, a 0.50 X 12.70m trench was begun with the same E-W axis as B6, a continuing up the slope of the hill. The topsoil was removed.
