Description This ash lens was localized to the area inside the Locus 10 semi-circular (apsidal) feature, and extended south to the edge of the Locus 4 collapse pile. It emerged in this area within a few centimeters after excavation of the Locus 12 soil deposit was begun. The lens consisted of nearly pure ash with cinders. The Munsell Color range was between 10YR 3/1 (Very Dark Gray) and 2/1 (Black). The deposit yielded no pottery, but many pieces of bone from various animal species. Unfortunately, due to some confusion during the excavation process these bones were mixed into B-7 from Locus 12 on the same day, so there is no separate bone bag for these finds. The deposit appears to originate from a period of secondary use of the Locus 10 semi-circular feature as a cooking area sometime after the collapse event. This interpretation seems to be supported by two factors: (1) the interior (south) face of the Locus 10 stones are severely blackened above the level of the original suspended floor; and (2) the depth and dimensions of the ash lens suggest it resulted from a period of sustained use rather than from a dumping event.
