Description This is the arch springer course of the exposed west face of the east cryptoporticus wall of the East Colonnade. There were three separate arch springers exposed between the south balk and the later north blocking wall (see Stage 2 below). Unlike the wall on which it sits (Locus 5), the springers are well cut and diagonally dressed. However, only one is preserved in Trench 82—the lowest stone of the northernmost springer. The rest have fallen out, leaving large holes filled with soil. The blocks to either side of each springer are roughly cut and laid with chinking.
