Architectural or Soil Locus? Soil
Description The third of the soil layers, Locus 4, is an orange-colored soil that was very hard-packed and had few finds. It probably served as an under bedding, separating Wall 8 and Stylobate 7. The Munsell color for Locus 4 is 7.5YR 4/6, strong brown. This layer is analogous to Locus 5 in Trench 25 (see Trench 25 Report). In general, it is found in the same manner in Trench 28 as it is in Trench 25. It is found to cover all of the exposed wall and in areas where the wall was not found, such as the exploration in the northeast corner. This does not contradict the hypothesis that the layer was a bedding between the wall and the stylobate, as it could have washed out and over those areas. Locus 4 was found on top of some of the stylobate pavers, but again this does not contradict the bedding theory, as it occurred only next to areas where the pavers had been robbed out and may be explained as wash. Also, the deposition of Locus 4 on top of the stylobate was only 0.03 m deep (Daily Field Form 28022). A coin was found in Locus 4. As it was found in the top of the layer and in the area of Locus 4 that had washed east from the wall, it may belong more properly to the deposit of Locus 2 (see below, Stage 4).
Top (m) Elevation (top): 898.636 m.
