Description | This sandstone doorway is in battered condition and is set to accommodate the curve of the building. It is composed of several small irregularly shaped ashlars set into eight courses on its east side and rounded ashlars in four courses on its west sideeach of the courses are set in mortar. The ashlars are set in two rows. This threshold indicates there have been several successive rebuilding periods over time when it has been reinstalled. If this room were used as a tepidarium, as we suspect it was, a constant heat source would have been deleterious to the condition of its architecture. The orientation of the door changes to directly north on its north side, providing access to the service passageway Locus 17. The bath system seems to have been planned as a single unit and it appears that it is on the same axis of orientation as the Great Temple, northwest to southeast. This locus along with others of the bath complex appears to be self-contained elements in an overall design that physically distinguish different areas of the baths. |
