Description |
7111 is directly below 7108 in the northwest portion of the trench. While excavating 7108 a large piece of mortar was unearthed which created an effective boundary separating SU 7111 from 7110 which both lie directly below SU 7108. The soil shows some of the color characteristics of 7109, the result of more plaster bleeding into the soil, though there is certainly less of it in this SU than SU 7109. The context material consists of more packed debris more so than elsewhere in the trench in quantity and size. Especially common (more so than elsewhere in the trench) are large roof tiles (10-20 cm) as well as mortar/plaster of similar size to that found in 7109, though there is quantitatively less of it here. The odd concentration of mortar, which defines the southern boundary of this SU, is simply a dense collection of tiles with quite a bit of residual mortar still attached. Once removed the soil loses some of its pink tint and returns to the dark yellow-brown seen before. Still, plaster flecks are common throughout the soil and the debris remains highly concentrated and soil firm too. SU closed arbitrarily, per excavation manual guidelines. *Because there is a very large limestone block in the NW corner of this SU, we have ceased excavating this area at 169.5. The idea is to keep this stone stable for safety reasons. Bottom Elevations N: 7.33 masl C: 7.31 S: 7.31 |
