Description | Locus 5 was limited to a rock feature located along the eastern baulk wall of the trench. The soil of Locus 5 was mostly dark olive-brown colored with occassional patches of a dark-gray colored soil; as more of the rocks were removed and as the locus was excavated, the soil became predominantly dark grayish-blue in color. The soil throughout the locus was extremely claylike and moist and often had a slightly fetid odor. The soil contained some roots and many medium to large sized rocks. Very little archaeological material, including terracotta roofing tiles or pottery, was found in Locus 5 and no bone or metal was found. Only ancient material was recovered from Locus 5, indicating that this was a contextualized ancient deposit. Locus 5 is equivalent to Locus 6, a rock feature located in the southeastern corner of the trench, and to Locus 11, the rock feature excavated in the eastern extension of the trench. |
