| Description |
SU 7109 sits under the eastern portion of 7108 and its extent is defined by the pinkish-gray soil that we have encountered (again, probably the result of high levels of plaster bleeding into the soil). Immediately it is apparent that we will be digging through a mass of mortar/plaster. Most chunks are in the 10-12cm rang, though we also encounter 15-20cm sizes as well. Tile fragments are still present, though mortar/plaster more common. Tile is typically 8-10cm range in size. Sandstone in 10-15cm range. The debris we encounter in this SU is incredibly dense, making it much more difficult to excavate than our earlier SUs—again, probably just a result of reaching levels below the plow zone and fill. The 19 gabs of mortar amply testify to this. The SU is closed when we encounter a new soil color, very pale brown (10 YR 7/4), which is encountered only in SU 7109. Again soil type remain the same as does the context material. By this point we are only a few cm above the “wall.” It is not immediately clear what this soil color change could represent. It is very subtle and its possible we’re being too cautious here—it’s also most concentrated in the SE portion of the SU. 16/6/09 Addendum: It’s possible that a portion of this SU dug into the interior fill of the wall, which is full of debris. The compactness here would support this and we can easily imagine the north face at an earlier date (possibly b/c of DOA, certainly 7112 is wall interior).
