Stage Description Construction of the West Staircase and Lower Temenos Retaining wall.
Phase IV
Description Locus 6 is a north-south, sandstone Retaining Wall forming the western boundary of the West Staircase complex. It is weathered and has some substantial gaps, but in some places is preserved to a height of almost 6 m above the Hexagonal Pavement (Locus 18 in Trench 18). It terminates at the bottom in the north with the engaged column discovered in Trench 5 in 1994 and extends upward to the south through Trench 32 towards the Western Walkway of the Temple. Just behind the lowest engaged column, a gap was laid or cut for the lead pipe, Locus 13. It is unclear how Locus 6 relates to the architecture of the West Exedra. The foundation sub-structures of this wall have not as yet been uncovered.
Bottom (m) Closing depth: 899.126 m at north; unknown at center and south.
