Definition Gray Lime Layer
Abuts None.
Description Munsell 10 YR 3/2 (Very Dark Grayish Brown). This intriguing soil layer seems to be a deposit of ashy lime, similar to (if darker in color than) a thick deposit excavated in the East Exedra and vicinity in 1998. It is tacky like clay, and balls easily if squeezed in one’s hand. The layer may be evidence of late industrial activity in the area and suggests the “paved room” was till in use in the Byzantine era, even if the pavement was obscured by the soils of Loci 9 and 8.

Phase Description Phase X: Site abandonment post major collapse dating to the Byzantine period from the CE 4th through 5th c.
Size Approx. 4.50 m-by-1.10 m (fills “paved room”).
