Description | This passageway between Trenches 120 and 127 was originally open and provided access into the Trench 127 Caldarium and the northern series of rooms. The passageway entry is from the west; to the north is the anteroom for the Caldarium in Trench 127. Straight on is the entrance to the Reception-Vestibule Room excavated in 2005. The passageway is straight and then turns at an angle to the south; it is faced with five courses of sandstone ashlars on its south and four courses on the north. All of the stones are set with a wet mortar. The north wall has a doorway 0.64 m in width with a preserved height of 1.20 m. Three holes for cross beams (locks for door closure) are found in the uppermost jamb. Three in situ pavers are in place measuring 0.63 m in width. The doorway to the reception room is set at an angle. Composed of five courses of ashlars on the south and north, it is 0.80 m in width, and its axis is northwest-by-southeast. Locks appear in the ashlars on the southwest measuring 0.13 m-by-0.10 m. The total length of the passageway is 2.80 m, which includes the angled jog assess into the Reception-Vestibule Room. The walls of the passageway leading into the Reception-Vestibule Room are apsidal in their placement. Later when remodeling took place, this passageway became part of a drainage system. This west doorway was filled in and the later fill and debris covered the plaster still adhering to the walls. The bath system seems to have been planned as a single unit and it appears that it is on the same axis of orientation as the Great Temple, northwest to southeast. This locus along with others of the bath complex appears to be self-contained elements in an overall design that physically distinguish different areas of the baths. |
