Description This is the floor surface which overlies the rough sandstone footing, either as a floor itself, or as additional bedding for a stone floor, now robbed out. It is at an elevation to allow it to articulate well with the bottom step of the stairs excavated last season. Unfortunately, it was not recognized over the entire of the West Exedra; it was either overcut through, or was already missing. Either seems an almost equal possibility, as where it was recognized it was in poor condition. Either its condition was too deteriorated to recognize, or its deterioration was a function of damage in antiquity. In the area where it was recognized clearly, approximately two-fifths of a ceramic vessel was found in pieces lying on the surface of the floor. It was identified by D. Johnson as Late Roman A ware; therefore, it may provide dating information for the floor and its associated platform.
