Stage Stage 1
Description This locus was 2 m-x-4 m and contains large grayish-white, hexagonal pavers. The pavers vary slightly in size from 0.45-0.48 m on each side and from 0.75-0.80 m from flat side-to-flat side, across the face. The exposed area has four full pavers in line from south to north and parts of 14 other pavers extending into the balks. The pavers contain virtually no cracks and have been well preserved, except that a few have had their surfaces eroded and slightly exfoliated. The thickness of the pavement is unknown at this time, for none of the pavers were lifted. When the surface of the pavement was cleared, no ash or mortar was found. Because excavation stopped at this point, it is presently unknown how the pavers were set. The surface of the floor itself is quite level, with elevations at the southeast corner of the southernmost complete paver at 879.21 m and elevations at the northwest corner of the northernmost complete paver at 879.20 m. These pavers should be compared with those both in Trench 1 and Trench 13. The former are 0.36 m and very broken. The latter, found in the Lower Temenos, appear to be of the same size as those in Locus 5 but, like the pavers in Trench 1, are recovered in a very fragmented state.
