Descriptive Attribute Value(s)
Underlies Locus 4.
Description 7.5 YR 5/4 (brown). Soil from inside the slots or grooves cut in to the top and front faces of the Theatron seating—specifically, from the "sockets" formed by the meeting of the top groove of a seat and the front face groove of the seat above it. Remains of wood and metal (nails) were recovered, seemingly confirming the theory that some wooden feature (armrest or rail) was inserted into the grooves in antiquity. Note that there is no independent evidence for dating these features to Stage 2—they could conceivably be late additions or replacements dated to Stage 3. However, since the architectural evidence suggests that the channels cut into the seats are original to Stage 2—therefore implying that some similar feature was inserted into the slots—these materials have been assigned to Stage 2.
