Description Locus 12 is a layer of loose, sandy soil (Munsell 10YR 5/8, Yellowish-Brown) that was found under the level of the arch vault collapse. When first noted, it was thought that this locus represented an accumulation layer that entered the Room via the west doorway after the area was abandoned and prior to the collapse of the arch/vault. However, it was discovered that the floor bedding (Locus 9) in areas in which this soil was found had been broken up by the arch fall, therefore exposing this underlying layer of soil. This locus, then, most likely served as fill used to raise the level of the Room and provide a foundation on which the floor bedding was laid. Locus 12 was distinguished by its lack of inclusions – two containers for artifacts were prepared, but no samples were removed.
Location Entire area of trench, below bedding surface.
