Description | This is a very fine layer of ash with a variety of finds in it. It is found primarily in the north of the trench, as well as near the wall next to the columns. It is the same ash that is found in Trenches 14 and 20 to the west and in Trench 30 to the north. The probable explanation for this layer is that the area was once used as a lime kiln. Limestone, baked at a very high temperature, crumbles and is one of the key ingredients for mortar. It is likely that much of the limestone that was once part of the temple was destroyed in this manner. The lime kiln was almost certainly not in Trench 36; the ash deposit here is fairly thin and does not cover the entire trench; instead, it probably spread from a nearby kiln. |
