Stage Description | Main construction of the Bath Complex. |
Description | This large niche is in the mid east, southeast of the S Rooms curvilinear chamber Locus 5 wall. The impressive niche lintel had to be removed during excavation due to the danger of collapse. Oriented southeast-by-northwest, this niche is composed of a platform with two levels. The lowest level or shelf is 0.14 m in depth-by-0.84 m in length. From the lower shelf there is a step back with a higher irregularly shaped shelf. The niche juts out from the curvilinear chamber Locus 5 wall, and there are vertical hemispherical cavities on both sides of this niche for the placement of vertical hot air pipes, tubuli, embedded with mortar in the wall. They jut out 0.13 m from the parent curvilinear chamber Locus 5 wall. Two extremely large V-shaped boulders support the niche ceiling. These boulders measure 1.50 m in length-by-0.55 m in width, and are laid side-by side across the top of the niche. They are backed by rubble fill. An upper supportive ashlar has been especially carved out for support is 0.06 m in diameter, and above this is a small water reservoir. The bath system seems to have been planned as a single unit and it appears that it is on the same axis of orientation as the Great Temple, northwest to southeast. This locus along with others of the bath complex appears to be self-contained elements in an overall design that physically distinguish different areas of the baths. |
