General remarks | Excavated as a feature in 2002. A section and an examination of the east baulk suggested that both the baulk and the section in the wall itself revealed limited evidence of mudbrick construction. However, the presence of reed impressions and the consistency of the soil composition lead to the conclusion that this had been excavated as a standing wall when in fact it was more likely to have been the continuation of the mudbrick etc fill shown in locus 5167. removed and the area reclassified as 5167 and 5174 cleaning loci for fill. |

Has note | Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci. |
