Architectural or Soil Locus? Soil
Description This layer is a hard-packed darker brown soil (Munsell 7.5YR 4/2 brown), with pockets of yellow soil (Munsell 2.5Y 7/8 yellow) and infrequent fragments of small, charred matter. This soil was found under Locus 1 beginning in the central eastern portion of the excavated area, and it continued south towards the wall marking the boundary between Trench 33 and Trench 17. Locus 2 does not appear in the western side of the trench, except in very small scattered pockets near the stones in the southwest corner. Locus 2 may represent a bedding layer, but for what is not known. Since excavation was limited to less than 1 m in depth, the thickness or depth of Locus 2 is unknown. This excavation was terminated because of the danger of falling debris into the Colonnaded Street area.
