Architectural or Soil Locus? | Soil |
Description | This soilo of this locaus is a 5 YR 4/4 (Reddish Brown). It is a silt layer, free of rubble inclusions, just above the hard-packed soils of the first abandonment phase (see Locus 6, above). It represents a depositional layer of a second abandonment period, just prior to the catastrophic collapse events which brought down the walls and columns in Trench 62. The locus was loaded with pottery and other artifactual materials, making this layer very different from other soil loci in Trench 62. The soft, loose-packed silt and pottery may represent alluvium (wash) from somewhere else; or the soil may have been windblown, collecting around an existing pottery dump. It is impossible to say for certain, but the large amounts of pottery may tell us something interesting after analysis. |
