General remarks Top-soil and washed layer. Since the trench is located on a steep slope (East side is app 1.5 m lower than the west), the disturbed zone will be deeper than flat trenches. The purpose of this locus is to make a leveled surface. I made arbitrary step at 2 m from East (dividing trench into East and West half). East side is about 50 cm lower than the West half of the trench. I found some large rocks, pot sherds, and grind-stone. All soil is disturbed. Ideally, the wall that divide the East and west should be 75 cm high, but ended the locus arbitrary about when we had 50 cm wall.

Has note Contexts excavated in trenches were recorded using the "locus system." A locus is any discrete three-dimensional entity excavated in a trench. The key to the locus system is the recognition that a locus is any one thing. Differences in soil composition or texture are therefore as important as, for example, the difference between a pit and a wall. If two entities were distinct, they were considered separate loci and were therefore assigned separate locus numbers. It should also be noted that every context excavated in a trench was given a locus number and thus the trench itself is made up completely of excavated loci.
