Scanning method Orangutans followed from leaving the nest in the morning until their night nest. Focal animals (Altmann, 1974) were observed for periods up to 65 consecutive whole or nearly whole days. The beginning and end of bouts were recorded. A foraging bout was defined as any period during which the orangutan inspected, reached for, prepared, extracted, handled, bit, chewed, or swallowed food or moved within the tree or vine that included the food source.
