Description | The bedding for the now robbed-out flooring (Locus 18), exposed in the west portion of SP 23, is built-up to the column sub-structure block on its west face. It is composed of sandstone slabs, 0.20-0.15 m in length and width. The bedding at the northern limit of the trench is probably part of the same installation; however, the slabs to the north are smaller (approximately 0.05-0.15 m in length and width), and most of the Locus 17 is covered by later architectural features, making its limits difficult to determine. It is possible that this bedding is not original to the Temple construction, if it was installed to support a later (not original) floor. Perhaps partial removal of this bedding in the future will help to determine its date. Its elevation is beneath the sandstone foundation block of the column, suggesting that it must be bedding rather than pavement, because this block would have been covered. (Originally, we believed the slabs around the column to be pavers, because of their size. The bedding in Trench 12, 1994, is also large, however, and it makes more sense because of their elevation and quality that these slabs are only bedding.) We did find one pavement slab to the north of Locus 13, wall. This shist slab is damaged at the edges but was originally an isosceles triangle. These pavers were also found in the Temple of the Winged Lions, arranged as stars. The date of this slab, however, must remain conjectural. |
