Description This is a sedimentary deposit which accumulated outside the west wall of the Hypocaust Chamber. It consisted of various soil types including silt, sand and granules, as well as pebbles and cobbles. The Munsell Color was consistently in the range of 7.5 YR 5/4 (Brown) to 5/8 (Strong Brown). The deposit yielded only a few small finds of pottery and glass. A small selection of architectural elements were recovered which included ashlars, door jambs, marble opus sectile pieces, and one small limestone capital fragment. One of the small sandstone ashlar pieces contained a four letter Latin inscription fragment, on which the letters had traces of red paint. The various architectural elements were scattered throughout the depth of the deposit, suggesting their positions were not the result of a singular event (i.e., collapse), but rather from subsequent alluvial action.
Definition Soil deposit outside West Wall (Locus 7)
Overlies Loci 34, 35.
