Description
  • This stylobate was one of the first things found and is first mentioned in Daily Field Form Sequence Number 25001. It extends north-south along the western half of Wall 3. It is composed of white, sandstone blocks which were mostly regularly-cut; however, many of these are broken. No columns were found in situ; however, there is evidence for their placement on the stylobate. This is in the form of raised, circular areas regularly-spaced at a distance of approximately 2.4 m, center to center. The columns would have protected the underlying stone while the surrounding stylobate was eroded. The same phenomenon is present in Trench 17. The columns from the stylobate in Trench 25 are exactly aligned with the columns in Trench 17. This indicates that the Lower Temenos was bounded by a triple colonnade, which had not been previously expected. It is possible that the blocks that comprise the stylobate at one point covered the entire wall. This is thought to be likely because Locus 5, the bedding for the stylobate, was present over the eastern half of Wall 3, as well as under Locus 1 (see above, Locus 5). Trench 28 was opened directly to the south of Trench 25 in an attempt to find in situ column drums and determine if Locus 1 originally extended over all of Wall 3. The remaining section of the stylobate as exposed in Trench 25 measures 15.75 m (north-south) and approximately 1 m (east-west).
  • Many of the stylobate blocks are incomplete and were probably damaged at this time. If the stylobate paving extended over the whole wall, then the eastern pavers were most probably robbed at this time. The western pavers were probably not taken because of the weight of the columns.
