Description | The Scalarion providing access from the West Aditus Maximus to the west half of the cavea. It rises from the floor level of the West Aditus Maximus, at a point immediately west of the threshold, up to the walkway on the lowest tier of the Cavea. This Scalarion is constructed of sandstone blocks approximately 0.65-0.70 m wide and ranging from 0.16 to 0.26 m in height. The elevations for the Scalarion, including the floor and the seven steps (a-g), from bottom to top are: Floor 885.98 m, Step a 905.736 m, Step b 905.976 m, Step c 906.236 m, Step d 906.486 m, Step e 906.646 m, Step f 906.836 m, Step g 907.036 m. The step tread's measure between 0.18 m and 0.30 m in depth. Of note is the fact that the steps of this Scalarion are on the whole higher and shallower than those of the Scalaria Loci 8 and 11. Their shallow treads make it awkward to ascend and descend. (Seq. 47165). |
