Description | Locus 13, 10YR 4/4 dark yellowish brown, a coarse, loose, sandy soil with inclusions of rubble and stone, is a significant rubble layer. It and the underlying Locus 14 essentially seal the top fill and ash layers from the loci more closely associated with the West Exedra architecture. Overcut along the northeastern part of the balk with Trench 5, Locus 13 is a combination of three smaller rubble/debris features excavated in Trench 5. While several rubble layers were recognized in the Trench 5 balk at the end of the 1994 season, it was difficult to discern these layers away from the balk in Trench 16. In addition, time became a factor in relation to the importance of these layers (which have been interpreted as later fill); thus, debris layers were combined to form this locus. Excavation supported this decision in the consistency of matrix, inclusions and artifactual materials, which were significant in number and included pottery, stone, bone, glass, metal, tesserae, stucco, shell, painted plaster, architectural fragments, coins, an almost-complete small jar and a perfectly preserved bone pin. The pottery assemblage from Locus 13 is slightly more homogenous than those from preceding layers and includes more recognizable fine forms and earlier forms (Late Roman, Roman, Nabataean) than overlying loci. |
