Definition Theatron Fill
Stage Stage 2
Description This soil is a Munsell 7.5 YR 5/4 (Brown). Dense rubble and soil fill supporting the lower five rows of Theatron seating, the Theater staircases, and their bedding layers beneath. Above (south) of the fill, the cavea seating was carried on the vaults of the rear staircases and storerooms; when these vaults collapsed, so too did the seating. The dense fill in the north however has preserved the theater seats. As can be seen in the profile exposed on the northeast and northwest "horns" of the Theatron, the fill was constructed much like the fill of the Upper Temenos forecourt: large rough-hewn blocks of sandstone laid level, with soil and chinking stones between. Smaller stones are used in the upper levels for bedding (see Locus 51), just below where the seats were laid. The fill would have been supported or retained by the Inter-Columnar walls on the east and west, the north wall of the so-called "East Chamber" on the south, and by retaining walls on the north which would have abutted the Erika and Deirdre columns (but have since collapsed; see Locus 60 below). The bedding was not excavated this season; in areas where seats still seal it the bedding should be removed in future seasons in order to recover material remains for dating.
