Description | Locus 4 is the slightly darker soil beneath and then next to Locus 3. It was declared at the same time as Locus 5, but since Locus 5 is the bedrock exposed above the surface of the soil at the opening of trench, Locus 5's elevations are really those of the trench at its opening. Locus 4 is confined to the NE meter of the trench and is ca. 10 cm thick as of trench closing. Locus 4 was not formally closed with the trench, but bedrock exposed on the floor of Locus 4 during the final day of excavation indicates that if CA-75 was re-opened that Locus 4 would not last much beyond 1 or 2 pickpasses. Locus 4 contained some finds, but probably due to its depth, not many compared to the numbers of Locus 2 or 3, but then most of the finds from those 2 loci were located in area above that of Locus 4. The three final coordinates listed in the Locus form indicate where the Locus enters the trench edge, not the baulk walls, so no elevations were taken here, see the elevation of the surface of the trench when it opened for an approximation of the elevation at these points. |
