Description This is a small section of an early wall constructed from unhewn boulders of various sizes, dry-laid in approximately 3-4 irregular courses with relatively large spaces between the stones (exaggerated in the North Balk sketch by the 1:10 scale, Seq. No. SP104193). Various types of stone appear to have been used, including sandstone. The width of the wall is unknown, as its north edge remains unexcavated beneath the north balk. The exposed portion of the wall has a slight curvature to it—emerging from the northeast and bowing back toward the northwest. The wall rests directly on what appear to be natural deposits, with no indications of a foundation or trench emerging in this sounding. It should be noted that Locus 27 appears to underlie this wall in the North Balk sketch; however, the excavation suggests that the course nature of the Locus 27 deposit may have scoured a little way beneath the existing wall. Several of the upper and exterior surface stones were dislodged during excavation before the wall construction was identified.
