Descriptive Attribute Value(s)
Description An open area behind the west arch (Locus 8) in the south wall (Locus 10) of cistern, which is plastered and built within the south wall. There is no apparent entrance or exit for water in this area yet, so it can only be assumed at this point that this area was designed to allow for more storage area for water when the cistern’s overall area was diminished by the building of the south wall. This opening is much deeper than the one in the east of the cistern, probably because the bedrock had been cut further south in this area or because the ceiling in this southwest corner was more unstable and in need of a larger part of the wall for support, necessitating a deeper niche and larger arch.
