AM

This morning we continued the topsoil cut that was started yesterday.  One of the stumps came out with this cut.  By lunch, the cut had been extended into the northern meters of the trench.  The floor was leveled and swept before 12:00.  We established a datum point on a nearby tree for the time being.  the datum is 84 cm above soil level and 52 cm above the point established on the bedrock outcropping along the southern edge of CD9.  This datum point will be used to take measurements below datum and these will be used in conjunction with below surface measurements.

PM

Continued the topsoil cut in the northern meters of the trench dropping the soil level down about 10 cm.  We used the pick ax and trowels and sifted the soil in bowls.  We started to use shovels and the wheelbarrow to sift the dirt in order to move a little faster since very little material has been uncovered thus far.  the floor of the trench was swept and leveled and Locus 1 was closed.  A new locus appears to be present under the 10 cm cut, but this may just be due to drying soil.

Locus 1 closing depths

below datum below surface

278S, 277E            82.5 cm                          9 cm

276S, 277E            75 cm                            10 cm

278S, 279E            74 cm                             9 cm

276S, 279E            81 cm                             8 cm

277S, 278E            80 cm                             ---

Locus 2 appears to be a medium-dark brown soil with small white stone particulates throughout.  It coveres the entire area of the trench and has the following opening depths below datum + below surface:

Locus 2 below datum below surface

278S, 277E            82.5 cm                          9 cm

276S, 277E            75 cm                            10 cm

278S, 279E            74 cm                             9 cm

276S, 279E            81 cm                             8 cm

277S, 278E            80 cm                             ---

This new locus was defined and then another pass was made in meter 278S, 278E.  No pottery or terracotta was recovered in this last cut.

Locus 1 produced 1/2 latte box of terracotta and only three fragments of very worn impasto.
