A 10 cm cut was taken in U/54-55, bringing this area down level with UV/53. Approximately 15 cm of topsoil and a second 15 cm cut were taken in meters U/54-55 by previous excavation. The groundline is rising as we move north - the level cut measures 35 cm deep in V/53 and 50 cm deep in U/53.
Approximately 1/4 a cassette of tile fragments were found in the U/54-55 cut and a minimal amount of pottery. A large terracotta "brick" was found in meter U/54 at 40 cm. The soil is markedly more gray here.
We continued clearing the plaster layer in WX/53-54. Just east of X/53, the bottom layer of protecting plastic was encountered. (The floor of the Southeast Building was covered by 2 layers
of plastic and dirt in 1987.) We will now clear toward the north and the baulk at V. A piece of ridgepole tile with moulded rope design was found on the plastic layer right side up.
The latter part of the afternoon was spent clearing out a stump in T/54. A portion of possible pithos rim was exposed under the stump - but not removed. The stump also remains. The soil under and around the stump was gray, dry, and schist.
