AM

Today we began excavating meters 16 W 2 S with pickaxes. We took an [approximately] 10 cm cut to bring this meter down to the level of the rest of the trench. This meter contained the medium brown soil and was relatively productive. We then moved up to meter 16 W 3 S, and took an [approximately] 10 cm cut with pickaxes. This meter was also relatively productive and contained the medium brown soil. We also began continuing to clear around the large flat rock in the trench.

PM

We took a pickaxe pass in meters

17 W 3 S, coming around the large flat rock. This meter was also relatively productive, but as we moved away from the rock the pottery and tile concentration grew more sparse. We also finished clearing around the large flat rock on 3 sides. There was a large concentration of tile and pottery around the rock. It also runs deep into the stratigraphy of the trench, extending into the yellow-brown soil at the floor level of the trench. We also identified a possible soil change in meters 1 + 2 S 16 W. There is a small concentration of rocks in this area and the amount of pottery recovered from the area has been high. It was hard to

make a definiative decision about the soil change because the soil had been so hard-baked and bleached by the sun, so before the end of the day we wet down the bottom of the trench and covered it with plastic so tomorrow we can get a better view of any soil changed. Today we found 5 boxes of pottery and \xbd of a cassetta of terracotta. We also made 16 special finds today.
