Daily Log

June 8, 1973

Cleaned the southern pits of R5 and had the profiles cut somewhat.

Some few sherds found on dug level.

Also, in this area, a rim of a low bucchero bowl was visible jutting out form the soil wall left out below possible foundation stones of Red Area Wall in J1 (southernmost part of this wall). The bowl was left there to be included in the picture to be taken of the western side of this wall.

After having cleaned all the pits we continued yesterday's digging low down in B/C 0 beside profile of UB wall, in the earth pocket in the bedrock.

Bones and pottery, (including bucchero) continued on a level c. 1.40 m from upper pres surface of UB wall, that is ca 30 cm below the distinct striccia of carbon, small stones visible in the whole length of the profile, sloping down heavily towards north: of profile drawing ER II p. 257-258 . Some of the bone fragments quite big. Among the pottery fragments found on this level should be noticed the following:

19730128

19730128
  • depth ca. 1.50 from UB wall
  • C 0
  • impasto pot

The soil in this pocket is stained with carbon all the way down to the bottom of it which is at a level c. 1.50 cm below UB upper surface. More sherds

occur in its western than in its eastern part. The sherds do not turn up as far down as immediately on the bedrock bottom, but not far from it. The bones are concentrated in the western part.

Width of pcket tapers from c. 60 cm to 25 cm (bottom).

Thus there are three separate strata to be seen in profile of UB wall in B-D 0:

1. Foundation stones of UB wall, resting upon soil

2. Distinct rahter thin band of carbon/small stones/pottery/tiles

3. Layer below 2, above bedrock, containing carbon, pottery, and bones.

The pocket in the bedrock in B-C 0-1 was exposed at the time when vases and bones got there.

Tried to take some of the profile pictures in the afternoon when some clouds appeared, but still too much sun.

Area B-D 2-3

Barely started work in area B-D 2-3 east of Red Area Wall, going through the carbon of D 2-3: of below p. 19 .
