This morning the lens area was more clearly defined in order to make a decision about its excavation. Upon scraping the area with a trowel, the difference between the galestra framing the area and the lens intself was highly distinguishable. A detailed drawing of the lens can be found on .
The northern half of the lens was chosen for excavation in order to create a profile to gauge the depth after the first pass with a bulk hammer, three bones were discovered and left in situ. Several bone fragments were removed during the passes, as well as terracotta plaster, two bucchero fragments and some impasto. The area was heavily laden with carbon and what appears to be burnt wood. The soil in the lens, designated locus #8 remains static, although the features looks to be quite shallow; about 10cm to give an approximation. From the profile, the feature gives the impression that it rests on a slant of bedrock sweeping in from the east. but the soil deposition does not look natural, nor do the nature of the artifacts recovered. the bones and pot will be left in situ until further notice.
