The stone fall inside the formation was drawn and elevations were taken.  Then work began on lifting the rocks.  The soil surrounding the rocks continues to be light brown-yellow and is hard-packed.  No sherds or other material than stone is found in this soil, but there are small calcium stones.  The large rocks fracture easily.

The central rock between the north and south walls was removed and the soil outside levelled to the line of the west edge of Cut 2.  Two sherds, 1 impasto and 1 redware, were found in this brown upper soil, on which the rock sat.  More rocks were found in the area below the central rock.

In cut 2, medium-sized rocks appear concentrated in the south edge of S13 and in S14, W70.  A few sherds were found among them, in the dark brown soil covering the rocks.

As we came down within the stone formation, a large rock filled all of the northern section, inhibiting further work.  In the remaining southwest area, the soil continued to be dry yellow clay-like earth with pockets of calcium.

In order to determine whether we had reached bedrock, we opened the cut to the north, into S13, W71 (western 50 cm), leaving a 50 cm baulk between this area and Cut 2.  We removed the small rocks which could be the continuation of the north wall, but left the large stones in situ.  The top layer of soil is dark brown, like that in Cut 2, with some small pieces of rock.  The rocks in the south face of the north wall end proved to be part of the rocks in the center of the formation; these appear thus to be bedrock.
