Daily Log Entry for Thursday, 29 July 2010

THURSDAY, 29 JULY 2010

MORNING : Trench is still damp from the rainstorm on Tuesday. Defined bedrock in the northernmost meter and trimmed baulks in preparation for declaring new loci. Declared 3 new loci. Locus 3 is the yellowish galestra-like soil between the two shelves of bedrock. The S shelf of bedrock is Locus 4 and the N shelf is Locus 5 .

Locus 3, 4, 5 Opening Elevations :

NW Corner: 194 cm BD = 26.69 m abs elev

NE Corner: 196 cm BD = 26.67 m abs elev

SE Corner: 153 cm BD = 27.10 m abs elev

SW Corner: 145 cm BD = 27.18 m abs elev

1. 189 cm BD = 26.74 m abs elev

2. 192 cm BD = 26.71 m abs elev

3. 186 cm BD = 26.77 m abs elev

4. 175 cm BD = 26.88 m abs elev

5. 181 cm BD = 26.82 m abs elev

6. 183 cm BD = 26.80 m abs elev

Locus 3, 4, 5, Opening Coordinates :

  1. (52 W, 32.14 N)
  2. (51.06 W, 31.83 N)
  3. (50 W, 31.86 N)
  4. (52 W, 30.74 N)
  5. (50 W, 30.98 N)
  6. (51.08 W, 31.5 N)

CA-68, Locus 3, 4, & 5 Opening

(see diagram in JRV-IV)

Locus 3 Munsell Reading :

dry: 10 YR 5/4 yellowish brown

wet: 10 YR 4/4 dark yellowish brown

Locus 3 Munsell Coordinates: (50.69 W, 31.53 N)

After opening the new loci, we picked in Locus 3 . The soil is soft, yellowish brown, and contains small fragments of decayed limestone. Except for where roots and rocks interfere, the soil is very easy to pick. No finds were recovered. A second pick pass was made with similar to results. No finds were recovered. Since the soil is galestra, and similar to the sterile soil CA-69 & CA-67 the locus was declared sterile and since the rest of the trench consists of bedrock, CA-68 was closed at 11:06 AM.

CA-68, Closing

(see diagram in JRV-IV)

Locus 3 Closing Elevations :

1. 198 cm BD = 26.65 m abs elev

2. 204 cm BD = 26.59 m abs elev

3. 191 cm BD = 26.72 m abs elev

4. 193 cm BD = 26.70 m abs elev

5. 198 cm BD = 26.65 m abs elev

For closing elevations of the corners of CA-68, see pg 53, which lists the elevations of the corners of the trench. No work was done to drop the level of either bedrock shelf, so the elevations listed there are also valid for the closing elevations. For the center of the trench at closing, see #5 above.

Locus 3 Closing Coordinates :

  1. (52 W, 31.85 N)
  2. (50 W, 31.89 N)
  3. (52 W, 31.22 N)
  4. (50 W, 31.49 N)
  5. (51.14 W, 31.45 N)
