1 box of tile
We complete the cut begun yesterday in H37-39 as we reach the northern edge of grid O37-39. The clayey soil over the burn layer produces little pottery and tile, through near the top of the cut, well over the burn layer a fine buff sherd painted with red and black stripes is found (#7). We reach a depth of ?, from the top of the trench, 100cm. 35 cm from the top fo the north-south wall. A striking number of bronze fragments are found around the borer of D-Eand mainly in 37-38 (#1-6) as well as a little slag. Pottery picks up towards the north. It is largely impasto and coarse ware. We are above the burn layer which presumably continues to the north here at a deeper level. Some streaks and chunks of white and orange, and some charcoal are present, especially near the "floor." CF the "white and yellow layer", supra p. 181 , to which this seems to correspond. Near the north edge fine ware, especially painted buff ware increases in quantity and bronze (#2) and slag are again found. Pottery, then is in good quantity from this are as a whole (2 cartons).
We then straighten the cut to include the whole eastern half of 37. Here we find a second stone "sling bullet", some bronze slag and additional pottery, including a black-figured sherd (#11). We cut further west in E-D 37; (find #12). We clear away the surface around F-G39 to create a smooth slope down to the north. Here the soil is, to the north an even dark grey, to the suth a hard, yellow substance, perhaps decayed debris. Samples of each are taken.
