Trench 1F

A trench measuring 2 x 6m was dug N of trench 1D (directly N of trenches 1A, 1B, and 1C) and was called Trench 1F.

In this area stones began to appear almost immediately below the surface and seemed perhaps to continue in a line with those in trench 1E. There's a large tree stump which was left in situ.

East of this tree stump there appeared a very definite line of  stones as the trench was taken down. To the N of the line it was almost solid with small stones such that work was finally discontinued in the area leaving numerous stones. To the S of the line the usual N Tile Stratum continued right up to the stones and seemed not to go under.

To the W of the stump there were several larger stones, rather isolated, which continued the line of 1D and 1E. At the usual depth the tile bed was found, but it seemed to end abruptly as it came just N of these stones where Stratum F was present. This perhaps is an indication that there is a definite break in the tiles when Stratum F appears. As a time saver Stratum F was not excavated to its June depth.
