Locus Summary

Locus 1:

261-263 S/279-281 E

* Opening depths originally taken not at coordinates

Opening depth               41 cm b.d.

Closing depth                 61 cm b.d.

Material recovered:

  • 7/6 latte box of terracotta
  • 7 coarseware fragments
  • 8 impasto fragmetns
  • 1 bucchero fragment (special find)

Locus 1 consists of topsoil with a dark brown soil with heavy organic content and intensive root systems.

*On pg. 34-38 where a description of the work done in locus 2 is given, this is recorded as locus 1 here assuming the excavator numbered the locus curving.  Consequently the locus recorded as 3 will be summarized as locus 2.  For all other loci forms are kept and the numbers for loci correspond exactly with the number in the summary.

Locus 2:

261-263 S/279-281 E

opening depth approx. 61 cm b.d.

closing depth approx. 73 cm b.d.

Material Recovered:

  • 2 and 3/4 latte box of terracotta
  • 15 impasto pieces
  • 9 coarseware
  • 1 bucchero

Locus 2 consists of a brown soil, lighter than the previous locus top soil.  There are fewer organic materials and fewer root systems as well.  The excavator (Joe DiLuzio) records a "relative explosion" of material but in no particular pattern.

  • 1 piece of ridged pottery was recovered ( pg. 66 )

Locus 5 was made when a 1 x 1 m part of the original trench was designated as locus 4.  Locus 5 consisted of light brownish yellow soil with extensive root system with occassional shells and an increased rock content.

* Locus 6 and 7 consisted of a tile spread across the floor of them.  Closing depths for both were recorded from the opening depths of locus 11 after the tiles were lifted.

Material Recovered:

  • 2 and 9/16 latte boxes of terracotta
  • 4 pieces of coarseware
  • 15 pieces of impasto
  • 3 pieces of orange impasto

Locus 6 was the eastern half of the trench were we found the tile spread, perhaps part of an ancient surface. Locus 6 consisted of a dark brown soil with increased high carbon content and a more dense soil.  There was also an increase of shells.

Locus 7:

261-263 S/279-280 E

opening depth (cm b.d.)       closing depth (cm b.d.)

261 S  279 E              81.8                                      89.9

Material Recovered:

  • 9/8 latte box of terracotta plus 6 pieces of worn tile
  • 2 pieces of coarseware
  • 5 pieces of orange impasto
  • 19 pieces of impasto
  • 1 diagnostic rim piece ( pg. 80 )

Locus 7 consistes of a very light brown/yellow soil with giant root structures which contained multiple tiles and terracotta with a dense concentration in the NW corner.  It also seemed to possibly be part of an ancient surface.

Locus 8:

261-263 S/281-282 E

opening depth (cm b.d.)       closing depth (cm b.d.)

261 S  281 E                 41.6                                 44.8

Material Found:

  • 1/4 latte box and 6 pieces of terracotta
  • 6 pieces of impasto
  • 1 piece of ridged pottery ( pg. 72 )

Locus 8 was the topsoil section of an extension put in to see if the tile spread found in loci 6 and 7 continued eastward.  Locus 8 consisted of a dark brown soil with heavy organic content and extensive root systems.

Locus 9:

261-263 S/281-282 E

  • 4 pieces of coarseware
  • 13 pieces of orange impasto
  • 32 pieces of black impasto
  • 1 piece of bronze ( pg. 80 )

Locus 9 consisted of a light brown soil with less organic material and fewer root systems.  The soil was also finer and thinner.

  • 4 pieces of impasto
  • 7 pieces of orange impasto
  • 1 unusual flange piece ( pg. 92 )

Locus 10 was a darker brown soil with high carbon content and more tightly packed than locus 9.  It is the same soil as the soil in locus 7.  There was no continuation of a tile spread into locus 10.
