First, closing depths were taken for Locus 2 and recorded at 19-23 cm b.d. A 5-10 cm cut was taken through E84/S13.5-15. Burnt soil was located in E84/S14 and characterized Locus 4.
Another cut was begun in meters E84/S12-13.5 in order to level the area with E84/S13.5-15. The area was designated Locus 3, though the top layer was characterized by many and large roots and 10 cm stones, which may have been due to the presence of a large tree stump in the area.
Greyish green soil, probably due to roots, sprinkled this area. In this work, 5 pieces of small well-worn
terracotta and two small impasto conical feet were recovered.
P.M.
The cut was continued in meters E84/S12-13.5. It was recognized that Locus 4 was comprised of a self-contained lens of reddish brown (seemingly burnt) soil adjacent to and extending outwards from the stump in meter E84/S12-13.5. No material was recovered from Locus 4.
After the area in meters E84/S12-13.5 was levelled to approximately the same depth as meters E84/S13.5-15, recorded at roughly 50 cm b.d., the stump was removed. Thereupon, the baulks were trimmed. In this work, 10 pieces of small tile and 14 fragments of impasto, including two conical feet, were recovered. These numbers represent
the total of material uncovered in today's work.
