AM:

The morning began with stringing the trench lines and the datum line on the tree in the NE corner. The surface of the trench was cleared; small plants/roots were clipped, superficial small rocks were removed, and leaves were raked. These materials were placed in the dirt dump established 10m SW of CB-46. After clearing, Locus 1 was declared across the trench. Elevations were taken in the center and in the four corners using the datum line, line level, plumb bob, and measuring tape. The NE corner elevation was taken just west of the corner stump, along the northern bulk wall; this is where elevations will continue being measured. Opening elevations are:

NE corner (0W, 31S): 29.81 mAE

NW corner (3W, 31S): 29.92 mAE

SW corner (3W, 33S): 29.77 mAE

SE corner (0W, 33S): 29.75 mAE

Center: 29.76 mAE

Opening photos of Locus 1 were shot, after which ground was broken. A one meter pick pass was completed along the western wall. The Locus 1 topsoil\x97the humus layer\x97is dark brown/gray in

color and is dry and crumbly in texture from being baked in the sun. This soil was sorted into buckets. A lot of organic material is present as well as terracotta, the majority of a bowl was found within this first meter pass. A lighter olive/brown claylike soil is beginning to appear across the lower portions of the meter indicating that we are approaching a second Locus . Within parts of this Locus small patches of a brighter yellow soil are surfacing, mottling the color of the Locus . This coloration is likely due to root deterioration. A second pick pass was done across the 2W-1W meter and again the new Locus is visible. Within this meter many small rocks were present, ranging in size from 15cm to 5cm in diameter. The loose rocks will be removed but we will be cautious of this area in subsequent passes. More terracotta is being found and little pottery. Heavy root rot is present in center of the trench causing the soil to appear gray in color.

PM:

Picking continued in the eastern most meter, through the last of the topsoil. Locus 1 soil continues to be sorted into buckets, while Locus 2 soil is being further discovered underneath. Much terracotta is

being found, little pottery. To further expose the Locus 2 soil a pick ass aws done across the entire trench to level the surface\x97picking only the high points. Once thee trench had a uniform, level surface, we began bulk walling the four walls and scraping the floor with trowels to prepare for the declaration of Locus 2 . Bulk walls were finished and the trench should be ready for opening photos of Locus 2 tomorrow morning after a final scrape of the floor and clipping of roots.
